Scissoring: True or False?
Scissoring is one of those sex topics that people tend to shrug off as silly or not even 'real'. We asked our favorite scissoring fan, Molly-Margaret Johnson (@whatswrongwithmollymargaret) to tell us just how real it really is.

One night I went on a Tinder date with this gorgeous woman who was in town from London. We met up at my favorite dive bar, threw back some beers and talked about Spice Girls conspiracy theories. After an aggressive make-out session in the bar, she brought me back to her Airbnb. We immediately started hooking up, clothes flying off. I was on top of her rubbing myself against her and moments later I realized, “Holy shit, I’m scissoring!”
I had never scissored before. Nor had I really wanted to. When seeing it in porn, I’ve always rolled my eyes at it because it looked underwhelming compared to all the other fun activities the performers were up to. How wrong I was...
So scissoring. What is it?
Scissoring is a sexual act that involves two people, typically those who have vulvas, grinding their genitalia together in a “one leg over, one leg under” fashion. It can be performed laying on your sides, sitting up or any other way you can make it happen. It’s basically a graduated version of dry humping. Scissoring rules! Not only is it NOT a 'lesbian urban legend'- it feels amazing. The direct contact between you and your partner is hot. My golden rule of sex: try everything twice. Once to allow for awkwardness and first time jitters and the second time to learn from your mistakes. It’s not for everyone but it’s certainly worth taking a whack at.
Scissoring is also a great move for folx who are new to vulva/vulva sexual partnerships. Eating out and fingering can often be daunting to newbies. Scissoring is intuitive and takes two to tango, so you can both have equal work and play during it, relieving you of performance pressure. It’s a fun way to learn your partner(s) rhythms and position preferences too.
So, you’re ready to try it? Awesome! Here are my pro-tips:
Lube
Lubrication is my cure-all for any sexual experiment and experience. It's been stated a million times before, it can only help.
Patience
Like any new skill, you may not have immediate success. It takes some feeling out, different angles and a can-do attitude. There is a learning curve to it. As long as you’re having fun and listening to your bodies, you can’t lose. Keep at it. It will get better. And better and better and better...
Creativity
Scissoring looks different for everyone and every body. Have fun trying out all the different versions you can dream up. Sitting, standing, on your stomach, interlock legs, get on the floor, take a break, and get back into it. It’s a super fun thing to play with because there is no “right” way.
Alternatives
All scissored out and nothing to show for it? No worries! What else can you rub against? A personal favorite is mine is rubbing my vulva against a partners thigh is a cowgirl position style. Maybe a partners stomach? Breasts? Honestly, I’m getting horny just thinking about the possibilities.
Next Level
Okay, so you’re no scissoring novice. I applaud you. You’re ready to up your game. Check this out. This is my favorite way to scissor. Get into you and a partner’s favorite position for scissoring, then one of you holds a handheld wand (like the famous Magic Wand) between the two of you so you’re both grinding against the wand and each other. It’s still incredibly intimate and packs an extra punch. (You can also slap a condom on the head of your wand for protection and easy cleanup.) This move makes me come in 30 seconds flat. Or maybe you want to add butt plugs to the mix? Or wrist restraints and blindfolds? Endless options really. Have fun!
