Getting Freaky Al Fresco
Let’s admit it—sometimes sex in the bedroom gets a little stale, and even boring. When you’ve done it in every room of your house, what’s left but the great outdoors? Outdoor and public sex is far from uncommon, and when done right, can be super fun and create some seriously sensual memories.
For one thing, sex outside is thrilling. Aside from the fact that you might be caught at any moment, there are sights, sounds and smells en plein air that you simply can’t experience in the bedroom. Exhibitionism and voyeurism are both super common fantasies, and in many studies and surveys, over half of respondents say they fantasize about sex in unexpected places. This goes for partnered and solo sex alike.
While it may be tempting to give in to your urges and boink in the nearest bathroom stall, you can plan and prepare for a public sex experience without dampening the mood at all.
If you’re interested, here’s how to get down safely (and legally) outside the boudoir...
Scope it out.
Voyeurism and exhibitionism can definitely be exciting, but for practical purposes, you might want to do a bit of location-scouting before engaging in outdoor sex. Naturally, the more populated the place, the more likely you are to be caught—so unless you’re ready to face the consequences, go for a fairly private (and preferably densely wooded) area. Sex on the literal beach can be risky, but doable in the dark! Cars are also an option, if you’re parked away from prying eyes.
If you’re into it, going camping and having sex in your tent, or in your campsite, can be an amazing way to fulfill your fantasy without incurring too much risk. In the middle of the woods, you’re more likely to be observed by a squirrel than another person, and after the deed is done, you can bask in your own glory instead of hiking back.
Know the law of the land.
Depending on where you live, getting caught having public or outdoor sex can land you in trouble. In many countries, there are laws against lewd acts in public and indecent exposure. For the most part, these are misdemeanors punishable by a ticket or fine, but sex offender registries are a thing, and even though outdoor sex is exciting, it’s not worth a stain on your personal record! In general, the likelier you are to be seen by another, non-involved person, the greater the risk. Always be careful and respectful of the safety and space of others.
Give in to your nature.
While ‘communing with nature’ sounds corny, giving in to your more natural inclinations can be really freeing. Who has time to worry about their looks when they’re mid-sex-act, covered in dirt with leaves and sticks in their hair? Seriously, though, now is as good a time as any to give into your urges, to let go of your inhibitions, get dirty and make some noise. Daytime or nighttime, if you’re in no danger of being overheard, go ahead and sound your barbaric yawp!
Try new positions.
At home, with your big, comfy bed right there, you might not be as willing to try a challenging new position. But up against a tree, it’s a whole other story! Use this as an opportunity to try sex standing up—it’s a totally different sensation, and as an added bonus, you won’t get dirt in your nether regions.
Some other fun positions are sitting on your partner’s lap, or a downward-dog-doggy-style, with one person in the yoga-like position, and the other standing from behind. But honestly, whatever positions you choose, the unusual place will definitely enhance the experience.
Come prepared.
Not to sound like your mom, but sunburns and mosquito bites are not sexy—bringing some sunscreen and bug spray is not a bad idea, especially when your parts that don’t normally see the sun are exposed to the elements. And why not have condoms, lube and your favorite toys on hand? If you’ve never tried it before, now is a very good time to try some light bondage with some silky rope! Trust us, if you like being tied to the bedpost, you're gonna love being tied to a tree branch. A little jar of salve isn't the worst idea either! Applying a little Momotaro salve to any dry spots you may get after a roll in the grass and dirt will keep irritation at bay, and is a nice aftercare ritual.
Plan your escape.
Before engaging in outdoor sex, agree on what you’ll do if you get caught. Whether you’ll hike up your pants and walk away whistling, or need to make a more dramatic getaway, make sure you’re on the same page with your partner. At best, you'll have an amazing experience together, and at worst, you might have a really, really awkward chat with a stranger or the cops. The risk is part of the thrill, but be responsible and talk about it beforehand.
